If prose is water,
Poetry is wine —
Both sweet and bitter,
Strong and intoxicating.

While it is water that
Sustains life,
Wine can color it
As poetry so often does.

Write it to celebrate,
Read it to relax,
Write it to numb the pain,
Read it to fall asleep.

If prose is water,
Poetry is wine —
The mysterious elixir that
Causes such elation and such trouble.
