Many times I’ve tried to tell a story through a villanelle and I do end up going back to that more song-like style of writing. It is difficult to achieve, but also kind of delightful when you read a villanelle that successfully pulls it off, probably because it is so deliciously surprising.

If no one minds, I’d like to add one to the list. My favorite villanelle by one of my favorite poets.
